Brisbane’s 3 Best Street Dance Studios

3 min read

Thankfully, there’s some amazing spots to hone your dance skills in Brisbane. Whether you’ve been dancing for years or are just thinking of getting started, the River City boasts some incredible dance studios, where you can learn everything from hip-hop to house and beyond.

In fact, part of the beauty of street dance is just how many different styles there are. You might have tried krump, but what about popping or locking? And how about footwork or waacking?

Every street dance style imaginable is on display at Red Bull Dance Your Style, a global, all-styles dance competition, where the best street dancers in the world compete against one another. The dancers have no idea what songs the DJ will choose to spin for their battles. Poppers might have to hit to rock music, house dancers might have to groove to rap. The thrill and challenge of it is being ready to freestyle to whatever song the DJ drops.

If you’re in the audience, Red Bull Dance Your Style is an opportunity to see street dance’s very best talent face off against each other – and get seriously inspired.

So where exactly are Brisbane’s best street dance studios? Read on to find the right spot for you.

Where: 2/43 Adelaide St, Brisbane City QLD 4000

We love Mad Dance House – and you will too. This Adelaide Street studio runs over 50 classes a week in just about every street dance style, including hip-hop, popping, locking, waacking and krump. And they’re a studio who cares about the community, regularly giving back by hosting workshops, awarding grants and producing shows and events. Mad House even runs $15 Friday classes to keep things affordable.

There are beginner courses for those just starting out, all of which are designed to give you the perfect grounding in your chosen style, plus plenty of advanced classes for the serious dancers among us.

Where: 19 Burke St, Woolloongabba QLD 4102

Looking for a slightly different take on street dance? Paradox Studios teaches the best of street dance worldwide – from the reggaeton out of Latin America to the Timba and Rueda that originates in Cuba. (Plus the occasional spot of hip-hop).

There are currently around five adult classes a week, plus regular kids classes. Prices start at $10 for a class, and levels range from beginner to advanced.

Where: 17 McLachlan St, Fortitude Valley QLD 4006

Hip-hop, heels, commercial jazz and lyrical (which blends expression with elements of contemporary and street dance) are all on the schedule at V-Hub Dance in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. There are three adult class levels – beginner, immediate and pro – and kids are also treated to their own special breaking and hip-hop classes.

V-Hub is run by Vanessa Friscia, who has been an active part of the Brisbane dance scene for over 15 years – her own personal dance style influenced by street dance, fusion, jazz dance, and contemporary training. Vanessa teaches a number of the classes herself, so quality is assured.
