A Deep Dive Into The Jazz Category At The Dance Worlds 2023

4 min read

We are counting down the days until we are back in Orlando watching power, sass, and all the energy of the Jazz divisions at The Dance Worlds 2023. The Jazz category is unlike any other because the teams’ styles can be so drastically different, yet somehow thrive under the same dance umbrella.

In the past, many teams brought their contemporary/lyrical style routines to the Jazz category. But in 2017, The Dance Worlds introduced the separate Contemporary/Lyrical category to the championship, leaving the Jazz division open for more powerful and fast-paced routines.

Jazz brings specific techniques, more power moves, and accents the most obvious musical cues of a song. The routines are meant to be sharp, crisp, and have an aggressive feel, while also allowing for softer moments. You get everything from high energy with speedy movement to moody and slower, deep, meaningful choreography that hits you in your soul.

You can expect to see plenty of kicks, turns, dynamic arm movements, and formation changes to leave you breathless.

These are the four different divisions you’ll see in the Jazz category: Senior Small, Senior Large, Open, and Open Coed Jazz.
